Is Patrick Mahomes already the best QB of all time?

As confetti poured down in Phoenix, Patrick Mahomes rejoiced with teammates and coaches after his second Super Bowl title in four years. Something already felt so familiar with the still-young quarterback winning again.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback has been nothing short of magnificent since taking over starting duties in 2018. He started out guns blazing, throwing 50 touchdown passes and winning league MVP in his first season. After now completing 5 seasons, his achievements are remarkable:

3 Super Bowl Appearances

2 Super Bowl Wins

5 AFC Championship Games (all at home)

2 MVP awards

Given how much parity exists in the NFL, it’s hard to expect to perform much better than how Mahomes and the Chiefs have in the last five years.

In addition to having the 27-year old prodigy, Kansas City also boasts one of, if not the best, coach and general manager combination in the league in Andy Reid and Brett Veach. They’ve been able to build and develop a roster filled with young talent, which is crucial when you have to pay top flight money for your quarterback.

Speaking of which, it was recently reported that Mahomes and the Chiefs are set to restructure his contract, once again making him the highest paid quarterback in the league. He signed a 10-year, $450 million contract in 2020, which already looks like a bargain for the team after many other quarterbacks have now signed for more.

For the last few years now, it seems like there’s only one player that is in the same stratosphere as the former Texas Tech signal-caller: Tom Brady.

Having now retired for the second time (perhaps for good this time), Brady has put together the best body of work of any quarterback in league history. With 7 Super Bowl titles in 10 appearances, nobody has been as successful as the former Patriots and Bucs quarterback has.

Notice I didn’t say he was the best quarterback of all time. Total career body of work of course matters, but Brady has never had a five year stretch like the Chiefs quarterback has had. In my eyes, Mahomes is already the best quarterback to ever play the game, and in time, everybody will come around on that idea as well. The only people who still believe Brady is the best are focused on his cumulative numbers and his whopping Super Bowl totals, which is as much a team stat as it is an individual one.

I mean all you have to do is look at the career stats of both players. Mahomes has 192 touchdown passes through 5 seasons. Brady’s 5 best touchdown-scoring seasons in 22 total seasons equal out to 203, barely surpassing the Chiefs’ quarterback’s total.

I don’t think anybody can argue that Mahomes is the most talented quarterback we’ve ever seen. It’s just a matter of time before all of the other numbers fall into place. But even if he never gets up to 7 total Super Bowl wins, I don’t think it’s a big deal. If he finishes with say, 4 or 5 Super Bowls, that will be close enough where the individual numbers clearly show he’s superior to Brady.

As a Chiefs fan, I feel so lucky to have Mahomes as the face of the team. Not only is he spectacular, but he seems to do things the right way. He’s truly a great representative for not only the team, but the league in general.

It’s likely fair that there is a bit of homerism on my part here, but I’ve been on this soapbox ever since his debut season. I’ve never seen a better quarterback play the game, and I’ve watched how the public perception of his play has drastically changed over the years.

One thing’s for sure: it’s an exciting time to be a football fan, as we get the opportunity to continue to watch a legend in the making do his thing.
