Things You Don’t Think You Need But Actually Do

In today’s world, we are constantly bombarded with advertisements and messages telling us what we need to be happy and successful. From the latest gadgets to trendy fashion items, it’s easy to get caught up in the idea that we need to constantly consume to keep up. However, there are many things that we don’t think we need, but that actually have a significant impact on our daily lives. In this article, we will explore some of these overlooked items and why they are important.

Water Bottle

Many people don’t think twice about buying disposable water bottles when they’re out and about. However, investing in a reusable water bottle is not only better for the environment, but it can also save you money in the long run. Plus, staying hydrated is important for your overall health and well-being. As someone who plays volleyball regularly and can potentially play for the whole day in the summer, having a big water bottle is a must. If you’re active like me, you might even want to invest in several water bottles.

If you’re going to be using a dishwasher however, make sure they’re dishwasher safe before making the purchase. You don’t want a scenario where they go in looking normal and come out all shrivelled up like in my friend’s case. She didn’t even toss it out until I told her she might be risking cancer and all sorts of other horrible diseases continuing to use a water bottle like that.

Quality Shoes

Your feet are one of the most important parts of your body, and they take a lot of abuse on a daily basis. Investing in a quality pair of shoes can make a big difference in your comfort and even your posture. Plus, they will last longer and save you money in the long run. I learnt this the hard way, I used to buy $30 shoes from Walmart thinking I was being budget conscious. But it ended up costing more in the long run because the soles would come apart and I would have to toss them out after 6 months.

Nowadays I wear Li-Nings and have had my current several pairs for at least two years and they are still going strong. Li-Nings are known for being built like tanks and the difference in quality definitely shows. They’re much more comfortable and last much longer so investing in some good shoes is definitely money well spent.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen is often overlooked as an unnecessary item, especially in colder climates. Given that it rains so much in Vancouver, a lot of people don’t apply sunscreen as often as they should. I’m guilty of that as well, thinking I can get away with it on certain days and ending up getting a nice burn. It’s important to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays year-round. Not only does this prevent sunburn and premature aging, but it also lowers your risk of developing skin cancer.

I made the switch from chemical sunscreens to mineral ones a while back, after reading that they might be safer in the long run since the chemical ones linger in your system for quite a while even after they’re washed off. But boy are the mineral ones hard to wash off, I have white streaks on my face even after washing twice. The trick is to use some sort of oil based cleanser, so if you do decide to go the mineral route, invest in a cleanser that works with mineral sunscreens as well.

First-Aid Kit

You never know when an injury or emergency might occur, and having a first-aid kit on hand can make all the difference. Basic supplies like bandages, antiseptic, and pain relievers can help you deal with minor injuries quickly and easily. I’ve certainly had times when I needed some Band-Aids but couldn’t find any, don’t let this happen to you.

Fire Extinguisher

While we all hope that we never have to use a fire extinguisher, having one on hand can be a lifesaver in an emergency. Whether it’s a small kitchen fire or something more serious, a fire extinguisher can help you contain the situation and prevent further damage.

Quality Mattress

Many people skimp on their mattress, thinking that any old bed will do. However, a good night’s sleep is crucial for your physical and mental health, and investing in a quality mattress can make a big difference. Plus, a good mattress will last for years, making it a worthwhile investment.

Having worked at a place called the Foam Shop, where they specialize in mattresses and foam couch cushions, there is definitely a difference in quality and support of the lower priced products compared to the higher quality ones. Not only do the higher quality pieces last years longer, they also provide way better support by not caving/sinking in nearly as much when having the same amount of weight applied.

Good Kitchen Knives

Cooking can be a joy or a chore, depending on the tools you have at your disposal. Investing in a set of high-quality kitchen knives can make preparing food much easier and more enjoyable. Plus, good knives will last for years and save you money in the long run. I rarely cook myself but whenever I do, I’m reminded of the benefits of having a good set of knives. They just cut through meats and veggies so much easier, whether you like to cook or not, good knives are nice to have.

A Library Card

Again this is often overlooked, while many people turn to the internet for information and entertainment, there’s something special about holding a physical book in your hands. Having a library card not only gives you access to a wide range of books and media, but it also encourages you to read more and expand your knowledge. Nowadays many libraries also lend out laptops and other gadgets, so even if you aren’t big on reading, a library card could come in handy.

A Gym Membership

Exercise is important for both physical and mental health, and having a gym membership can help you stay on track with your fitness goals. Plus, many gyms offer a range of classes and equipment, making it easier to find a workout routine that works for you. For me I stay active by playing sports regularly but I know for a lot of people, they’d rather go to the gym or find working out at the gym targeting specific areas to be more effective.

A Personal Planner

In today’s busy world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and forget important tasks or appointments. Investing in a personal planner can help you stay organized and on top of your schedule. Plus, writing things down can help you remember them better. Whether you prefer to carry a physical one or like the convenience of having an app on your phone, there are lots of suitable choices.

There are many things that you may not think you need, but actually have a significant impact on your daily life. From a reusable water bottle to a good mattress, these items can improve your health, save you money, and make your life easier and more enjoyable. By taking action and getting the stuff you need, you’ll notice a palpable improvement in the quality of your life.
