If you missed this event in Burnaby, don’t worry, there are other things that you can do with your friends and family to celebrate International Dance Day.

Scotiabank Dance Centre in Vancouver also has celebration that will go from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Admission is also free for most of the events with some selected events that require you to purchase tickets for entry. There will be performances by Gladstone Secondary School with choreography from Virginia Duivenvoorden and Kay Huang. They are both dance artists and choreographer from Vancouver.

International Dance Day was established in 1982 by UNESCO (United Nations for education, sciences, and culture) to encourage people around the world to learn more about dance culture. Every year on April 29th, people celebrate and appreciate dance culture through festivals and lively events. This date is also in commemoration of the birthday of a famous French dancer and balletmaster, Jean-Georges Noverre.

Dancing is a healthy practice because it is a type of fitness exercise. Tap your feet to the beat or move your body around, I think that anyone can be a dancer. Age shouldn’t be a factor, and nothing should stop you from dancing. People all around the world have their own way of dancing, and every culture has their own uniqueness to dance culture.

Each year there is a different theme, they will choose a type of dance or choreographer to deliver a message. The theme for last year’s International Dance Day 2022 was “Dance for Life”.

The main goals that the International Theatre Institute (ITI) want to promote for International Dance Day is to raise awareness and allow people to enjoy and value dance in any form. They also want to encourage diversity and inclusivity for all dance forms. Most importantly, they want to share the joy of dance for all races, ethnicities and cultures around the world.

I know that I’m a shy person and I don’t really like dancing. I remember when I was little my mom tried to put me in ballet classes, but I would just stand there and cry. That doesn’t mean that I can’t appreciate dance as an art form. I like to watch people dance and perform rather than dance myself, but I think the closest I’ve ever been to be a dancer would be the dancing video games.
