Lehman Landing in Abbotsford, British Columbia, was once a key river port along the Fraser River, serving as a vital transportation and trade hub in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Before highways and rail lines dominated the region, sternwheelers docked here carrying settlers, supplies, and agricultural goods, helping shape the economic foundation of the Fraser Valley. Named after early settler Samuel Lehman, the landing connected farming communities to larger markets and played a quiet but essential role in Abbotsford’s early growth. Today, little remains of the bustling dock, but its legacy reflects the era when river travel powered British Columbia’s frontier expansion.

Sumas Lake was once a vast, shallow lake covering thousands of hectares in what is now Abbotsford, British Columbia. For generations, it sustained the Sumas First Nation and provided rich fishing and hunting grounds. In 1924, after years of flooding and pressure to expand farmland, the lake was drained through a massive diking and pumping project, transforming it into the fertile Sumas Prairie.

The project reshaped the region’s economy and landscape, but at significant environmental and cultural cost. Today, the former lakebed remains productive farmland, while periodic flooding serves as a reminder of the water that once dominated the valley.

Railways were central to Abbotsford’s rise in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the 1880s connected the Fraser Valley to coastal ports and national markets, accelerating settlement, agriculture, and lumber exports.

Rail lines shaped the town’s layout, drew businesses to the corridor, and established Abbotsford as a regional hub. Stations and sidings became focal points of daily life, moving people, mail, and goods. Though transportation has evolved, the rail corridor remains a defining feature of Abbotsford’s historical and economic foundation.
