Let’s Boycott Valentine’s

There’s 22 days till Valentine’s day and my local London Drugs is covered with heart shaped chocolates, cards with cheesy sayings, and pink stuffed animals… Yuck.

I’ve honestly never been a fan of Valentine’s day. I mean sure the chocolates are nice but I can buy those anytime, the whole thing that sets them apart is the fact that it’s in a heart shaped box and maybe a different flavour like red velvet or something but the prices are just jacked and not even worth it.

I remember in elementary school, we’d all get together and pass out Valentine’s that we made for the class, I even thought that was weird? What was the point of that? I mean I guess it’s nice to get together and do that as a group but really, is it necessary? Half the time it also always ended up causing problems. So and so has a peanut allergy. So and so can’t even sugar. It just causes complications that could’ve easily been avoided with one solution, boycott Valentine’s.

I probably sound like the grinch of Valentine’s but I think the culture around this holiday is pointless, it’s a hallmark holiday, just a day for business to profit off a bunch of stuff that will just get thrown away. And don’t me wrong, I think it’s super nice to celebrate love of any kind and make the other feel special whether it be your wife, boyfriend, friend, whatever but having one day dedicated a year just feels … odd.

Don’t even get me started with going out for dinner on Valentine’s. The ambiance of every restaurant is just killed with the tone of couples being overly PDA and close conversations, but if that’s your vibe then you like what you like, me on the other hand, not so much. Getting a reservation is also another huge thing – everyone going out on one day, it’s like getting into a bar on New Years Eve, good luck!

I’ve been with my boyfriend for over 2 years now and I’m extremely lucky and grateful we’re on the same page about skipping over this holiday. We don’t go out to eat or do anything crazy and it’s the perfect night for me, I’m a homebody, I’d rather spend the night in any way.

So while you’re stressing about getting your Valentine’s day plans in order, maybe just take a second to think about it, it’s not worth it, but hey, that’s just my two cents.
