The Art Of Procrastination

If someone were to ask me one of the main pillars of college culture as someone who is a college student. I’d answer with the art of procrastination. It’s almost as if putting things off is a rite of passage, a skill you develop along the way, whether it’s avoiding that looming essay deadline or saving the last-minute cramming for exams. It becomes a way of life for us college students.

But procrastination is an art, and artists need to hone in on their craft. So how is this done you may ask? Practice, practice makes perfect after all.

The thrill and rush of the deadline approaching fast is a not so niche college experience. Adrenaline is known to be a motivator – the feeling can get you up and going. Holding something off till the last minute, to me, gets it done faster and makes it feel like hardly any time was actually spent on it! Some people thrive with the pressure of a deadline. If you’ve learned that panic can help you lock in and stay focused, stick with it!

When I’ve procrastinated to the max – I have a superpower – hyper focus. Nothing can get in my way. I’m an unstoppable force to be reckoned with. Trying to tempt me with a super bingeable Netflix series? Don’t even bother trying, I’ve just clocked in for my shift at the lock in factory and I get no breaks.

I feel the procrastination sneak up on me the most when I’m doing my homework from home. Ugh I can’t work in a messy room – I’m going to clean it first. Hm going to the gym before might help get me focused – I’m going to go to the gym. And once all that stuff is all done, only then am I ready to crack into my assignment. But hey! Look at all the stuff I got done before. A solid workout and a room clean, that sounds pretty productive to me, so maybe this whole I’m a procrastinator thing isn’t so bad after all.

This mix of productivity from procrastination, the adrenaline boost and the hyper focus all sound like positives to me. Moral of the story is – don’t let people shame you for your “bad habits”. Whatever works for you works! Keep mastering your craft, procrastinators—there’s no shame in the game.
