Dry January: Day 18

Since when did it become so normal to drop $10 on a beer?

Happy day 18 of dry January to all those who celebrate. How’s it going? How was getting through last Friday night? Having a hard time saying no to a sunny day happy hour? Cause I’m kinda feeling that.

It’s a gorgeous sunny Saturday in January and I will NOT be spending it sipping the day away on a patio. Although that does sound glorious and a tad tempting, I’m sticking to my promise to myself of 31 days alcohol free and I’m just a shy 13 away.

But back to the $10 beer. Yesterday I was walking along the seawall to kickoff the weekend with my friend. We stopped into a coffee shop to grab a latte for the rest of the walk and the price for a 12oz beer was $10. The cost for a 5oz glass of wine was $12 and an Aperol was priced at $17. When I was out drinking I never really thought about just how much I was spending. Me and my friends wanted another round? No questions asked, we just got another one. But then of course the next morning the guilt would slip in knowing how much I spent on just one single night.

Then I glanced at my bank account, I didn’t realize just how much I’d been saving this past month. All the little things on a night out add up fast. Lets just say your picking up a six pack to pre with that’s about $15, then an Uber/taxi to where your going lets say is around $25, a shot for you and your friend $20, a couple more beers out $20, a snack after the bar $10, and the ride back home lets say is $20. $110….. And that’s playing it safe. Now times that say 4 or 5 times out that month that can be upwards of $500 being spent on nights out. Let that sink in.

So let that be your motivation going into this Saturday night if you’re having a hard time keeping dry.

$500 could be filling up your car 5 times, an apple watch, a weekend getaway, some concert tickets, or even a new BBQ.

I know it can get hard, but think of yourself in the long term saving money and making most of your days! So cheers to 18 days, you got this.
