The Swift Effect

Some may view us as a crazy obsessed fan base, or just fans with a “basic” music taste, some think we’re annoying and that she’s crashing your Sunday night game, however we’ve supported her through everything and we will continue to do that, we’re ready for every release or RE release….

If you haven’t guessed it already, I’m talking about the one and only Miss Swift.

I’m a die hard Swiftie however I wouldn’t consider myself to be a pushy Swiftie. I know some go to the extreme, arguing that she is the best musician to walk this planet (although I do agree) and will battle anyone when they say all her music sounds the same (It doesn’t) or all her music is about break ups (It’s not). Music is so subjective, people like what they like and should be able to listen to her or whoever they want in peace. However reading that back now I guess I do sound a bit like a crazy Swiftie….

Taylor Swift has created an empire for herself as well as a family of Swifties. Starting from her Debut album to bringing new Swifties along the way with even her latest album releases The Tortured Poets Department and Midnights.

I’m pretty sure everyone with a phone, on social media, or just tuning into the news has heard about her iconic Eras Tour which ended in BC Place on December 8th. This tour which spanned across 5 continents with 149 shows was something else. And for the non Swifties who may be confused about the whole Eras Tour concept, Swift basically compiled songs from EACH of her albums she has released (or re-released) and put it all together to create one long 3.5 hour show that spanned the duration of her career. I was lucky enough to see this show two times, once here in Vancouver and once in Seattle back in July of 2023 and each time it was tears of happiness from the moment she stepped on the stage to her final bow.

So why is Taylor Swift’s fan base and culture so strong?

A prime example I like to share is a lyric from the song, You’re Own Your Own, Kid, “so make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it”. Without Taylor mentioning anything about friendship bracelets other than just that one single lyric, Swifties came together with the idea to make friendship bracelets and trade them before/after the concert. This small simple act brought together so many people from so many different backgrounds and walks of life to share in one thing that we all had common ground on. And to get a whole stadium of 70,000 people or so to do this is simply just insane to me.

So props to Swift creating a fan base where such a diverse group of people can bond together over her music and all the eras along the way.
