The Canadians Women’s soccer team has a new head coach.
If you followed the 2024 Paris Olympics closely then you may have heard some of the drama that went on with the women’s soccer team. If you’re not up to date on what went on last summer, long story short, Bev Priestmen the head coach, along with analyst Joseph Lombardi and assistant coach Jasmine Mander were gone from the team after the drone spying scandal where they were caught spying on the New Zealand teams practice ahead of the match.
Priestman was then fired from her position as head coach of team Canada and the team was left without a head coach, until today.
Casey Stoney from England has been named the new coach of Canada’s women’s soccer team! This is super exciting for the team and fans alike after the stress of Priestman being dismissed from the team following the drone spying altercation. Stoney has a lot of experience and accolades under her belt and the 42 year old coach is ready to coach the team to success.
Stoney has a number of titles to her name including being the team captain for Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics in London. She has been to 3 FIFA Women’s World Cups and took home the bronze medal back in 2015.
Stoney hung up her cleats and played her last game back in February 2018 however she didn’t take too long of a hiatus from the field as she was back coaching in June of 2018 starting her coaching career off as head coach of Manchester United women.
Stoney will make her debut as coach in Spain at the Pinatar Cup in a three match series. This Cup will take place in February and the team they will be playing is still to be announced.
Since being named head coach Stoney has said she is honoured to be joining Canada Soccer and she is excited to be working with a talented group of players.
