It looks like there are many different adaptations on classic musicals that are emerging for this holiday season. Honestly, it’s cool seeing a bunch of creative takes and cool ideas to tell classic stories in a new light. The adaptation Im talking about is “A Wonderheads Christmas Carol” which puts a fun, whimsical and large-headed twist on a the OG holiday classic A Christmas Carol.

A Wonderheads Christmas Carol is a cool and fun adaptation of the Charles Dickens iconic “A Christmas Carol” that has actually been around for as far back as 2019. This musical does stay true to the original story but uses different things to tell the story you know and love. The play however has no dialogue to it but the story is told by using visuals to tell the story and give the play a take on the classic that still feels fresh to this day.
Now you might be wondering what are the stage visuals they us to tell the story? Well apart from the classic music played by the orchestra, The play uses giant masks for all its characters which honestly look hilarious, luminous ghost figures, puppets that are 10 feet tall, and innovative stagecraft ideas to really bring the play to life in a different way both creatively and visually. Also, some of the things like the big head masks really will test you to hold back your laugh. Especially, During a few of the scenes in the play. I’m of course talking about the image below.

Honestly, Looking at this play, It really shows that people can get creative and tell already loved stories in a way that someone never thought they could be told before. I never thought that the Christmas Carol story could be told without any of the dialogue and only through visuals. Especially when the words really play a huge part of the story.
But I guess if this play shows one thing is that the human mind is a creative one. This really shows with the founders of Wonder heads who created this play, Andrew Phoenix and Kate Braidwood, won an award for this play for its unique approach to storytelling.
If you’re interested in unique and creative idea to storytelling then this play is something you would want to check out. The show will be coming to the Centennial Theatre in North Vancouver and New Westminster from the 11th-13th of December. Who knows I might even see you there. However, What do you think about these different ideas and adaptations on classic musicals? Leave a comment to let me know your thoughts.
