Gimme Gimme Disco! At the Commodore Ballroom

I often feel like I was born in the wrong generation, mainly because being a teenager in the 70s is something I’m so sad I’ll never be able to experience. The early to late 70s is known for its up-tempo, groovy dance music, better known as disco.

You’ve probably heard songs such as “Boogie Wonderland” the hit song in ’79 by Earth, Wind & Fire, “I Will Survive” by the glamourous Gloria Gaynor, and my personal favourite disco song, “Disco Inferno” by The Trammps. If you’re like me and enjoy a good night of dancing and disco music, I’m here to no longer gatekeep one of the best events in Vancouver where you’ll feel transported back in time to a decade of funky, groovy disco fun!

The Gimme Gimme Disco is coming back again to Vancouver and will be held at the Commodore Ballroom! Although it’s still a couple of months away, it’s never too early to start thinking about your winter break plans. The event is scheduled for Friday, December 27th, which is only two days after Christmas and a few days before the new year!

The Gimme Gimme Disco is a DJ-based touring dance party that plays all your favourite hits from the 70s and 80s. ABBA, The Bee Gees, and Donna Summer are some featured musical groups and artists you’ll hear at this event. Disco attire is definitely encouraged, so whip out those sequins and glitter!

Earlier this year, in April, I attended the Gimme Gimme Disco and had the absolute time of my life. Funny enough, I actually discovered this event through an ad on Instagram. It was unlike any club or concert I’ve ever been to with a crowd ranging from people my age (19) to people who actually grew up in the disco era. Not to mention the DJ kept the crowd alive and hyped all night long, oh and took song requests!

And for anyone unfamiliar with the Commodore Ballroom, it is one of the best venues in the city in my opinion. It has a wide-open dance floor with some table seating, as well as a balcony and a bar that offers a wide range of beer, wine, spirits and cocktails. It is also easy and accessible to get to via public transit as it is a 7-minute walk from Granville Station.
