I’ve attended BCIT for over a year and have tuned in to our radio station (Evolution 107.9) many times since I first enrolled in the program! It’s been fantastic hearing classmates on the radio and songs from the various bands who get played on the station.
Near the end of last year, I even got to be on the radio, providing an hourly sports update – which was lots of fun! I have always been interested in the different kinds of bands played and want to look at one band in particular! Join me as I learn more about the FOO FIGHTERS.
The Foo Fighters were formed near Vancouver in Seattle, Washington, in 1994. The ringleader of the musical group is Dave Grohl, the former drummer of the legendary rock band Nirvana, who took over after the tragic death of Nirvana’s frontman Kurt Cobain.
Grohl initially recorded a demo album’s worth of songs after Nirvana’s dissolution and played all the instruments himself. Grohl switched from drums to guitar and took on the role of lead vocalist for the Foo Fighters.
The name “Foo Fighters” refers to unidentified flying objects (UFOs) and was taken from the term used by Allied aircraft pilots during World War II to describe various aerial phenomena.
Dave Grohl recorded the band’s first album, “Foo Fighters,” as a solo project, playing all the instruments himself. The band’s debut self-titled album, “Foo Fighters,” was released in 1995. The album’s success led to the formation of a full band, with Grohl on vocals and guitar, Nate Mendel on bass, Pat Smear on guitar, and later additions of Taylor Hawkins on drums and Chris Shiflett on guitar.
As the years have gone by, the Foo Fighters have become one of the most successful and enduring rock bands of the past few decades. A mix of alternative rock, post-grunge, and complex rock elements characterizes their music.
Some of their most popular songs include “Everlong,” “My Hero,” “Learn to Fly,” “The Pretender,” and “Times Like These.” Their song “Rescued” is the song you will likely hear the most on our radio station! The band has won multiple Grammy Awards and has a dedicated fan base worldwide. Their energetic live performances are also widely acclaimed.
The band’s lineup has evolved over the years, but the Foo Fighters remain active and are known for their consistent presence in the rock music scene. They continue to be a prominent force in the rock music scene.
The more I learn about this band and the individuals who have made it what it is, the more interested I become. I love digging deep into the things that are around me, and music played on BCIT is something that surrounds me!
