Crème de la crème: The top chocolate bars to turn to when you need it the most

It’s late. You’re hungry. You may or may not have the munchies. You need that chocolate bar that’s going to hit just right. You head over to your local convenience store and see about 100 different options. How do you know which to choose?

You’re in luck, because as a chocolate fiend for several decades, I’ve tried everything numerous times. I’ve curated a list that you can turn to whenever you’re in doubt over what to buy.

The best chocolate-candy hybrid: Big Turk

Big Turk is a a popular, yet under-the radar chocolate bar that offers a scintillating mix of chocolate and Turkish delight. Debuting in 1974, this bar is probably more of a special occasion type of treat. I’ll have maybe 2 or 3 a year, at the most.

The cool thing is even if you don’t like Turkish delight, you may still enjoy Big Turk. This bar also gets points for its colourful and bold wrapper, which really stands out on the shelves.

The best bar with a little crunch: Hershey’s Cookies and Creme

This white crème dynamo has been melting hearts since 1994, developing a cult-like following along the way. It’s got the perfect mix of chocolate and crunch, as the cookie does not overpower in any way.

One interesting thing about this bar is that since 2008, Hershey replaced the expensive cocoa butter with oil substitutes. For this reason, you won’t see the bar advertised as containing white chocolate.

Back in 2020, Hershey’s released two variations:  Strawberries ‘N’ Creme (a re-release from 2005) and Cookies ‘N’ Mint. These were fun alternatives, but are no match for the original. Hershey’s should stick with what brings in the big money.

The best non-bar: Mini Eggs

Mini Eggs went from an Easter-only sort of chocolate to what it is today: a staple on snack shelves everywhere. It’s actually kind of a hack move to eat Mini Eggs during Easter.

This snack behemoth has shockingly been around since 1967, and has delighted people ever since. The thin candy shell around the delicious Cadbury chocolate makes it quite difficult to eat less than 30 in one sitting.

They’ve recently paired with Chips Ahoy to make a Mini Eggs cookie, as well as a bar, with positive results. They also now have Micro Mini Eggs, which is a tad bit silly, but an interesting idea.

The best bar for sophisticated tastes: After Eight

I know what you’re thinking: After Eight is something that your grandmother may enjoy. Although this may be true, it’s not a bad thing. I think that if you can enjoy this elegant dark chocolate-mint blend, your chocolate tastes are pretty advanced.

After Eight has been around since 1962, with a beautiful dark green packaging being their staple. They have recently had different variations, like After Eight Sticks and Thins. Unlike other chocolate variations, these work extremely well, and actually may enhance the flavor profiles.

The best chocolate with sweetness: Terry’s Chocolate Orange

The longest running chocolate product on this list, Terry’s Chocolate Orange has been around since 1932. The brand has changed ownership several times, but this timeless classic has stuck around.

Terry’s Chocolate Orange may or may not contain crack-cocaine, because I swear it’s the most addicting chocolate I’ve ever had. Something about the process of smacking it, and peeling off slice after slice is ritualistic and lovely.

I get it, not everyone loves the chocolate and orange taste. To those people, I’ll say this: grow up, and learn to love this legendary chocolate experience.

In the ever changing world of new chocolate bars and variations, the above have separated themselves from the competition. I hope this guide helps you decide what you are looking for when you need it the most.
