The gentle goat

Did you know that Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Ed Sheeran, P!nk and Julia Roberts were all born in the Year of the Goat? It’s interesting to know what famous people were born in the same zodiac year as you because then you can share similar characteristics and personalities. It doesn’t mean you must be like them because everyone is unique, but it is still cool to know.

For me, some famous people that were born in the Year of the Ox are Barack Obama, Diana Spencer (Princess Diana), Walt Disney, Malala Yousafzai, Bruno Mars, Gal Gadot and Morgan Freeman. They are all so different from each other, yet they all share some of the similar characteristics for being born in the Year of the Ox.

Do you like Chinese mythology?

Do you know which zodiac animal you are?

I will be writing a series of stories where I will talk about the twelve different Chinese zodiac animals. I will share some of my observations and fun facts about my friends and family that are born in those years.

Recap:

Before adapting to the twenty-four-hour clock in western culture, in Ancient China, they used to divide a day into twelve periods. Each period is about two hours long and is named with the twelve earthly branches. When talking about the twelve zodiac animals, you will see the earthly branches written with the animals. Its purpose serves as a numerical number and also tells the time and date of the Lunar Calendar.

Goat 未羊 (wèiyáng)

Goat or Sheep is the eighth animal in the twelve zodiacs.

Goat (yáng) is associated with the eighth earthly branch (wèi) which is from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

Goat is an important symbol for many cultures. Some view the goat as an important item in their diet, other use the goat as a sacrificial offering. Mutton was considered to be a healthy food option in ancient China when comparing to the meat of other domestic animals like the horse, ox, chicken and pig.

Many Chinese characters use the radical for goat (yáng) in combined words for tasteful foods, freshness, flavourful or beauty.

People who are born in the Year of the Goat (2015, 2003, 1991, 1979, etc.) are known to be gentle, sympathetic, kind-hearted, just, and creative. Although they may seem to be very gentle on the outside, they are actually very tough on the inside. They like to spend quiet quality time on their own, but they also like to be in groups. They like to make everything lean and tidy, they are responsible and compassionate to others.
