Fruit Bats at the Commodore Ballroom

On May 27th, the band Fruit Bats will play in Vancouver, British Columbia’s Commodore Ballroom. The band is currently on tour in support of their newly released album, titled “A RIVER RUNNING TO YOUR HEART.”

In 1997, Eric D. Johnson of the United States of America established Fruit Bats, an indie rock band. Johnson, formerly of the indie rock band The Shins, founded the band as a side project. Johnson’s unusual voice and the band Fruit Bats’ infectious tunes have made them popular. The band has published many albums throughout the years, earning them a devoted fanbase among listeners of alternative rock.

The first album by Fruit Bats was 2001’s “Echolocation,” published by Perishable Records. Critics lauded Johnson’s songs and the band’s jangly, folk-influenced sound, and the album did well critically. In 2003, Sub Pop Records released “Mouthfuls,” the band’s second album. The album was more refined sonically, and the band experimented with more pop elements.

There have been several lineup changes for Fruit Bats throughout the years, with only Johnson remaining. In 2019, Merge Records released “Gold Past Life,” the newest album by the band. The album earned positive reviews once again and showcased the band’s efforts to develop their own style.

Johnson’s unique voice is a distinguishing feature of Fruit Bats’ sound. His songs often deal with love, grief, and the beauty of ordinary life, and his voice has been likened to those of Neil Young and Tom Petty. Many of the band’s songs have catchy melodies and choruses that encourage listeners to join in on the fun and sing along.

Several movies and TV shows have used Fruit Bats’ music over the years, including “Shrek 2,” “Stranger Than Fiction,” and “How I Met Your Mother.” They’ve done a lot of touring, both as headliners and as support for other indie rock acts like The Shins and Iron & Wine.

Over the course of their career spanning over two decades, Fruit Bats have amassed a devoted fan base as a respected indie rock outfit. The band has made a name for itself in the indie rock scene with their memorable hooks, jangly guitars, and Eric D. Johnson’s distinctive vocals. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or just discovering Fruit Bats for the first time, you can’t help but feel uplifted by their music.
