A taste of Hong Kong in Vancouver

If you have previously read my stories on Hong Kong’s “yum cha” (drinking tea) culture, the iconic Hong Kong styled beverage “silk legging milk tea” and the pineapple looking delicious baked good from Hong Kong bakeries, you don’t want to miss out on the biggest Hong Kong cultural event in Vancouver next weekend.

On Sunday May 7th, HK House will be presenting their second annual event, Vancouver Hong Kong Fair, at Anvil Centre in New Westminster. It will be a full day loaded with cultural events for the public learn about the Hong Kong community in Vancouver. Starting from 11:00 am in the morning to 7:00 pm in the evening, there will be lots of activities and vendors at the venue for the community. There will be a selection of talented Hong Kong artists, exhibitions, cultural events and live performances. This event is a great way for showcasing the multiculturalism we have in Vancouver and it is also a means to preserve the cultural heritage of the Hong Kong people.

“We are excited to be offering a full day of workshops, including several sessions sharing the lost art form of HK sugar art, Cantonese language storytelling for all ages, Hong Kong-style origami, a movie screening, and more”

“We hope that the diaspora community can feel rejuvenated after being in the company of other Hong Kongers and that folks from across Metro Vancouver can come to celebrate our culture with us…Come check out the amazing Hong Konger artists, creators and performers while feeling the amount of love and joy that was poured into creating this space.”

One of the sponsors of this event is UBC Cantonese Language Program and they have designed some t-shirts that will be on sale to promote Hong Kong culture. One of the events at the fair will be Cantonese storytelling and language workshops. Two of UBC’s Cantonese lecturers, Dr. Zoe Lam and Raymond Pai will be there to teach the mini lessons.

I have taken an advanced Cantonese course with instructor Raymond Pai when I was doing my undergraduate studies at UBC. In fact, the “Looking Hong Kong Through a cup of Milk Tea” that I made was the final group project for his class. He is very nice and enthusiastic about preserving the Cantonese language. I’m sure there will be something to learn and take away at the event.
