Giants fall short to Kamloops Blazers… again

The Vancouver Giants lost 7-4 to the Kamloops Blazers on Friday night, October 22, in Kamloops. This was the Giants’ second straight loss to the Western Hockey League’s B.C. Division-leading Blazers after losing 5-0 at home to them on October 16. The Giants’ record is now 2-2, with Fabian Lysell, Adam Hall, Ty Thorpe, and Nicco Camazzola the goal scorers. Boston Bruins 2021 1st round pick Lysell had two assists to go with his goal, giving him four points in the three games he has played in so far.

I got the chance to watch the G-Men last weekend against the Blazers on the 16th, and Lysell looked very good. But often seemed like he tried a bit too much and was forcing plays instead of making the easy play. That isn’t to say he didn’t make any nice plays. However, late in the third period, he stick-handled his way through three Blazers and almost pulled off an exceptional solo effort to break the Blazers shutout. Hopefully, with his three-point effort on Friday night, he can start to heat up. The Giants will need him and captain Justin Sourdif to produce to the best of their abilities if they want to make a run for the playoffs and deep into the playoffs.

Back to Friday night’s 7-4 loss, the G-Men were down 5-1 heading into the 3rd period and even got out to a 6-1 lead early in the 3rd. Until the Giants jumpstarted a comeback that began with Adam Hall’s team-leading fourth goal of the season to make it 6-2. Under 20 seconds later, Nico Camazzola scored his first career WHL goal to make it 6-3! Then, with under 10 minutes left to play, Fabian Lysell scored off an excellent assist by captain Sourdif (who also had his 3rd multi-point game of the season) for his first career WHL goal, and the score was 6-4. But with under 5 minutes to play and an empty net, the Blazers scored to make it 7-4 and ice the game. Luckily the Giants don’t play the Blazers again until November 12. However, the Giants play the Kelowna Rockets on Saturday, October 23, at the Langley Events Centre at 7 pm.
