Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside has buzzed with talk of a Southeast Asian plant called kratom, which has gained attention as a possible solution to opioid addiction. However the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently released a memo describing kratom as dangerous and without health benefits.
Paula Brown, director of the BCIT’s Natural Health and Food Products Research Group, is one of two Vancouver researchers consulted in the article who challenges the FDA’s stance.
