On December 2, 2016 the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science, announced more than $173 million in funding to support a total of 203 new and renewed Canada Research Chairs at 48 post-secondary institutions across the country. This funding will help support cutting-edge research in a number of fields, including environmental and climate science.
“This renewed funding from the Canada Research Chairs Program, along with the ongoing support from BCIT will allow me to continue the research and development of new technologies to improve the lives of people with disabilities.” said Dr. Jaimie Borisoff, BCIT Canada Research Chair, Rehabilitation Engineering Design. “Some of our rehabilitation engineering design projects we aim to improve are wheelchair access on sand or snow, cardiovascular exercise equipment, and walking exoskeletons”.
Dr. Jaimie Borisoff, a researcher with the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) and ICORD, the VGH-based health research centre focused on spinal cord injury, has been renewed for an additional 5 years as Canada Research Chair for his work in rehabilitation engineering design at BCIT. Dr. Jaimie Borisoff created the Elevation™ wheelchair, which allows the user to adjust the chair and backrest in real-time throughout the day.
“We are grateful for the ongoing support of the Canada Research Chairs program” said Dr. Km Dotto, Dean, Applied Research “This funding helps us keep innovative thinkers and researchers like Jaimie Borisoff to continue exploring new technologies to improve the lives of people with mobility issues.”
Created in 2000, the Canada Research Chairs Program has helped attract and retain some of the world’s most accomplished and promising minds. Canada Research Chairs deepen our knowledge, enhance our quality of life and grow our economy.
