The second World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics (WFCP) International Awards of Excellence was held on September 24, 2016 in Vitória Brazil awarding BCIT applied research with Gold. Kim Dotto, Dean, Applied Research was present to accept this prestigious award.
WFCP recognizes outstanding contributions whose exceptional initiatives are strengthening applied learning and research outcomes.
This award is presented to a college that has demonstrated excellence in addressing real-world challenges through applied research.
BCIT has a multitude of world class researchers who have extensive collaborative work internationally, consistently growing and expanding applied research that benefit higher applied education at the international level. Highlighting a few of our researchers:
- Fitsum Tariku was BCIT’s first Canada Research Chair (CRC). Dr. Tariku’s area of expertise is Whole Building Performance. In addition to his CRC, he has received awards for the Best Journal Paper Award, Building Simulation: an International Journal, Housing Studies Achievement Award for Doctoral Thesis, Canada Mortgage and Housing, and finally, Industry Support Award, National Research Council of Canada, Institute of Research in Construction.
- Paula Brown holds the CRC in Phytognalytics and has numerous awards for her work in Natural Health Food Products research. In 2016 she received the “Neil Towers Award” form the Natural Health Product Research Society of Canada, the Herbal Insight Award from the American Herbal Products Association and First Place Blue Ribbon award from the American Urological Association. Over the years before 2016, she received a total of 7 different awards for her research.
- Hassan Farhangi, Director of the Smart Microgrid research group, holds 4 patents and has contributed numerous publications to international scientific journals. Most recently because of his prominence in the Smart Microgrid field, he was honored by being made chair of the Canadian Smart Grid Research Network (NSMG-Net), which is a network of Industry, academic institutions and students in Canada.
Applied research is practiced throughout all schools and departments at BCIT, and originated from student-led applied research projects for community groups and small-to-medium-sized enterprises, to collaborative research programs involving faculty, students, and external partners that provide solutions for problems affecting and entire industry.
