- Hi! My name is Malena and I am a student in the Prosthetics and Orthotics program at BCIT. I have been enjoying this program immensely, and the opportunity to be traveling to India to work alongside Samuha is incredible. I am really looking forward to learning about what prosthetics and orthotics is like outside of Canada, being immersed in the culture in India, and hopefully making friendships abroad!A bit about myself….I have two younger siblings and my first language is Spanish as my family and I immigrated to Vancouver from Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2003. I enjoy hiking, painting, playing volleyball and watching movies. Also, I love trying new foods, so I am really looking forward to exploring the different food flavours and dishes in India!
- Namaskara! My name is Shane and I am very privileged to be a student of the BCIT Prosthetics and Orthotics program. This opportunity has given me valuable skills towards becoming a successful practitioner, allowed me to travel both within and outside of Canada, and most importantly meet some incredible people. I am very excited to be traveling to Koppal, India while representing the Samuha Overseas Development Association alongside such a talented multidisciplinary healthcare team. I look forward to utilizing the skills I have learned in the classroom while completing my orthotics placement. This will be my first time leaving North America without travelling with a rugby team. I played for the UBC thunderbirds while completing my undergraduate in kinesiology. India has a similar sport called kabaddi, which I was lucky enough to play in high school. I hope that during my visit in India I will be able to see some authentic kabaddi skills.
- Hello, I’m Yvonne. As the orthotic instructor at BCIT I feel very privileged to have the opportunity to join Shane and Malena on this trip to work at Samuha. Applying our class work into rural India will be an adventure for all of us. I am looking forward to working with the local health care workers to explore innovative solutions for many challenging situations. It wil
l also be great to work interprofessionally with other volunteer physiotherapists. Since this is the first time that prosthetic and orthotic volunteers have gone to Samuha, this is a bit of a reconnaissance trip. It will be exciting to see how things work and hopefully lay down the ground work for future volunteers!
- Namaste! My name is Jenny Billett. I am a certified orthotist, working on my prosthetic residency . I am a BCIT Alumni and I am excited to join Shane and Malena in this journey to Koppal, India. I am thrilled to be part of the multidisciplinary team representing the Samuha Overseas Development Association. I am excited to exchange knowledge and techniques in P&O to help improve the lives of those living in rural India. I look forward to learning more about the culture in India and hopefully master a few curry recipes!
