Two P&O students are heading to Koppal India to complete their January orthotic clinical placement with a non-profit organization called Sumuha Overseas Development Association (SODA). This adventure will take place during December 2015 and January 30, 2016. This webpage is intended to share our P&O experiences and thank all of you who supported this exciting adventure. Samuha is a Non-Governmental Organization that began operations in 1987, with the mission to
improve the quality of life of vulnerable people within defined periods of time. Under its umbrella,
Samuha has different sectors that support various needs within the community. “Samarthya” is the
sector that was created to support people with disabilities.
Samuha Overseas Development Association (SODA) is Canadian based in Prince George, BC, and is headed by retired physiotherapist, Hilary Crowley.
SODA aids Samuha Samarthya in southern India by supporting the lives of people with disabilities achieve their maximum potential, to enable them to lead their lives independently and meaningfully. SODA activities include a clinical service and education. The first involves providing clinical services and funding for orthotic and prosthetic supplies and mobility equipment. The second is providing training sessions for the community-based rehabilitation team in South India and by the arrangement of rehabilitation student practicums from Canada.
The clinical placements for Canadian rehabilitation students are technically run and managed by Canadian clinicians with SODA. Although UBC has been sending physiotherapy students for many years, this is the first year that orthotic and prosthetic students have partipated. For more information check out http://www.samuha.ca/.
