Objective:
– To illustrate convection currents.
Apparatus:
- Glass container with two chimneys
- Tea Light Candle (fresh one only!), Lab Jack
- Braided string, matches or butane lighter
Method:
If a candle is lit under one chimney and a smoking string is held over the other chimney, the smoke will be drawn down the cold chimney by the warm air moving up the hot chimney.
Note:
Do not let the smoking string rest against the chimney walls, as the heat melts the plastic chimneys.
Please use fresh tea light candle each time it is set up.
Make sure the lighter is supplied in the corrugated cardboard bin.
