Objective:
– To illustrate that the primary and the secondary windings do not require electrical connection to operate.
Apparatus:
- A unit with a transformer circuit
- 40 W lamps, 2
- Electric toothbrush charging base
- Coil with 2 blue LEDs
Method:
Lightbulbs: A lamp is connected in series with an inductor, which represents the primary windings. A matching inductor is connected and attached to a second lamp. This inductor represents the secondary windings. When two inductors are put together, the lamp in the secondary will light illustrating mutual induction by completion of the electromagnetic circuit between primary and secondary windings of the transformer.
Toothbrush base: The electric toothbrush base, representing the primary windings, is plugged into an outlet. The removable piece with the two LEDs, representing the secondary windings, is set atop it as the toothbrush would to charge. The LEDs light up.
