Financial Wellbeing – A Dimension of Wellbeing

During the month of January, the Student Life office and Student Life Ambassadors will be focusing on Financial, as one of the 8 dimensions of student wellbeing.

BCIT has a number of services related to financial wellbeing which are available to students.

The Student Financial Aid and Awards office (Burnaby – Building SW1, Room 2132) is the go-to place for financial information. Students can get information both in person and over the phone. Virtual appointments are also available for students at the Aerospace and Annacis Island campuses. The general office phone number is: 604-432-8555 and the financial aid email is finaid@bcit.ca.

While many people know of the Student Financial Aid and Awards office for things such as bursaries and scholarships, this office can also help with additional services such as tuition fee deferrals, student loans and emergency funds.

Throughout January, Student Life Ambassadors will be promoting financial wellbeing, and the services related to this, by setting up booths on all BCIT campuses and by engaging students in an interactive activity. Student Life Ambassadors will be available to answer any questions regarding financial wellbeing and will be actively involved in teaching students about the related services.

One important date that the ambassadors will be focusing on, is the January 30th bursary deadline. To get a bursary application, you can simply download a copy of the form online or pick one up in person at the BCIT Burnaby office. (For more information on eligibility, visit the Student Financial Aid & Awards website.)

Other BCIT resources related to financial wellbeing include, Student Employment services (eJobs) and BCITSA Career services. The service called eJobs, helps students by linking them to opportunities and employers related to their field. The BCITSA Career services holds workshops and information sessions to help students in their journey in finding a job. Some examples of topics that they discuss include: interview skills, creating an effective resume and cover letter, and job search strategies. They also offer one-on-one meetings and online workshops.

Whether you are looking to find work, or looking to get financial assistance with paying for school, BCIT has many services available to help. I encourage everyone to look into these resources further and check out the financial booths in which the Student Life Ambassadors will be setting up around campus throughout the month of January.
