BCIT Recreation Services: Floor hockey

BCIT Recreation Services is proud to kick-off 2025 by introducing new drop-in sports programs for the Winter 2025 term. These sessions are intended for BCIT students, faculty, staff, and community members to try out different sports and maybe even join a team for this year’s intramurals season.

In this article series, I go in depth on some of what BCIT Recreation Services has to offer to its students, and the BCIT community at large.

Floor hockey Thursdays

The first night of floor hockey drop-in at BCIT Recreation Services was on Thursday, January 16. It was an absolute blast. I am not usually open to trying new things, but floor hockey caught my eye as something interesting. Growing up, I have always loved watching hockey and I felt like it was something I could do well.

On that day, I showed up at 5:25pm and was the first one there. As people started trickling in around 5:40pm, we started off with a warm-up while we waited for more players to arrive.

I played lacrosse for over 9 years when I was younger. Yet, it has been a few years since I have played at all, so it took me a little bit to find my groove. My warm-up routine on that day consisted of missed and weak shots, and terrible stick handling. I thought for sure that I was cooked the moment the game started. Fast-forward 10 minutes, and we finally begin making teams. We started 3v3, and I met my awesome teammates.

Highs and lows

The ball drops, the play goes back and forth a few times with some nice saves and missed shots. The opposing team set up the offence, took a shot from the point and scored. As we head back to the faceoff circle, I realize I am absolutely gassed. It has been probably four years since I have had to run this hard.

Only 2 minutes have elapsed, however I was not alone in my struggles. Most of the players on the floor were low on battery, and we could have used some fresh legs at that point for sure. Unfortunately, we did not have any subs, so we continued to play, and it was very exhausting, with a lot of walking.

We were all having a lot of fun, passing the ball and working as a team, even though we were super tired. As a lacrosse player for most of my life, I thoroughly enjoyed the feeling of being on a team and working together as one. After so many years of being out of the game, I felt like I was finally part of something again.

We played for the rest of the night. While I did not score any goals, I had a few nice assists and plays. That first break could not have come soon enough, and I am very sore while writing this, but I will for sure be back next week, and the weeks to come.

Why you should join

Drop-in hockey lasts for 4 weeks, and I encourage you to join and experience the same feeling I had. Make sure to try out a few different sports to see what you like. If hockey is not for you, check out other sports at the BCIT Recreation drop-in webpage.

I will be trying out drop-in futsal next, read here to learn more about my experience.
