Putting people at the core of everything we do is paramount at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. We are committed to ensuring our people — those who make BCIT distinct, are developing while feeling valued, supported, and connected.
BCIT is a people-first organization. We aim to celebrate our employees by sharing their stories through the Our People series. The series features BCIT’s extraordinary employees who share a strong sense of pride and ambition for the Institute and make up our diverse community.
Get to know Julie Pereira, Systems Administrator, Campus Planning and Facilities, who has been working at BCIT for over 25 years. Julie provides support and maintenance to the Institute’s Integrated Workplace Management System – Archibus.
BCIT recognized Julie this year with a Long Service Award for her 25 years milestone with the Institute.
How did you get started with working at BCIT?
I sort of fell into working at BCIT. I started way back in 1998 working with the switchboard in the Telecom department. I thought it would be a temporary gig but I enjoyed the people I worked with and helping students. From there, I took part-time courses at BCIT and worked my way up to my current position.
What are projects or initiatives that you have completed at the Institute that you are proud of?
A project that I am proud of is the implementation of the preventive maintenance module in Archibus. Prior to this project, preventive maintenance within Campus Planning and Facilities was a paper-based system. By moving to an online platform, we have been able to save thousands of sheets of paper each year. My role in this project included working with a business analyst to map our processes to the software, working with tradespeople on testing and feedback, performing necessary customizations, and staff training.

Do you have a favourite spot or activity at the BCIT campuses that you enjoy spending your time at and why?
I love the area around Guichon Creek on the Burnaby Campus and the trees surrounding it. I enjoy going for walks there. I find it very peaceful and calming. The Campus Grounds team have really done a great job bringing that area back to life.
Share with us how what you are passionate about outside of work. Do you have any hobbies?
I am passionate about travelling – I want to see the world! Over the past couple of years, I was lucky enough to travel through New Zealand and Australia and am heading to Ireland this fall. A hobby of mine is sewing – primarily vintage style dresses and coats. I love the couture techniques used in the 1950s – clothing was so well-made then.
