Feelings of elation, joy, and gratitude were everywhere—from the graduating students who received awards to the donors who made it all possible during this year’s June Graduating Awards Celebration. Held immediately after the BCIT Spring Convocation ceremonies on June 25, 26, and 27, donors who made an impact on students’ lives and helped support their academic journeys joined BCIT President Dr. Jeff Zabudsky, faculty, staff, and guests to celebrate recipients and their achievements.
The Graduating Achievement and Graduating Awards recognize high-achieving graduates and reflect BCIT students’ pursuit of going above and beyond their disciplines. In addition to their academic excellence, the recipients were also acknowledged for their outstanding leadership and positive contributions to the community and at BCIT.

BCIT recipients share heartfelt thanks to generous donors
During the event, many students shared stories about the challenges they faced while pursuing their intense and rigorous programs and how donors’ generosity impacted them on a personal level.
“The awards gave me time to learn about myself and the paths available to me,” said Alejandra Loaiza Granda, a multiple student award recipient, and BCIT Architectural grad. As the recipient of four awards including the BC Building Envelope Council Education Foundation Graduating Achievement Award, BC International Success Award, Architectural Institute of British Columbia Award in Architecture, and the BCIT Architecture Academic Award, Alejandra understands firsthand the value of going the distance at BCIT and in life. “These awards gave me time to push through because I didn’t have to worry about how to make ends meet and work an extra job to finance my academic pursuits.”
BCIT Business + Media alumnus and guest speaker Matthew Cox, Director of Marketing and Creative Concepts at Outside The Box, echoed Alejandra’s sentiments as he recalled the wave of relief of having to work less shifts which allowed him to focus on his Digital Marketing program at the Institute. He also encouraged event attendees and graduates to “be bold and to go out into the world and make a positive difference wherever you go.”
BCIT President applauds new alumni and award recipients
“Congratulations on your academic accomplishments and for completing an important chapter,” remarked Dr. Zabudsky. “You know more than any of us how hard it is to get through BCIT’s programs and how this has armed you with the skills to find success not only in industry, but also in life. We look forward to seeing the positive impact you make in the world.”
