Our People: Meet Sam Issari, Student Records Supervisor

Putting people at the core of everything we do is paramount at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. We are committed to ensuring our people — those who make BCIT distinct, are developing while feeling valued, supported, and connected.

BCIT is a people-first organization. We aim to celebrate our employees by sharing their stories through the Our People series. The series features BCIT’s extraordinary employees who share a strong sense of pride and ambition for the Institute and make up our diverse community.

Get to know Sam Issari, Student Records Supervisor, who has been working at BCIT for over one and a half years. Sam supports the Student Records team in processing and managing students’ and alumni records.

What do you enjoy the most about working in post-secondary education?

The students! It is incredibly inspiring being amongst an environment of learning and buzzing minds. Each student is at a different stage of transformation; it feeds my soul knowing that I can support and empower our students to contribute to the betterment of our community and society.

What are projects or initiatives that you have completed at the Institute that you are proud of?

It can’t be understated the volume of work that is accomplished by the Student Records team every month of the year, with nearly no down-time. Aside from the holistic support provided to students I’ve committed time as a Wellness Champion for the Wellness Committee in promoting not only the wellness of our students but our staff. Also, as an ally of BCIT Pride I take every opportunity to promote psychological safety environments for folks with varying identities. Having recently been elected as the BCGEU Board of Governors member, I intend to promote wellness and inclusivity while representing our diverse union body, to align with the provincial government’s mandate for the Institute and the upcoming renewed BCIT Strategic Plan.

What has been your most memorable moment working at BCIT?

My most memorable moments, without a doubt, are watching students walk across the stage at convocation. We support the students throughout their time at BCIT and help them navigate barriers and challenges. To witness their hard work come to fruition during such a celebration will continue to be the highlight of my career. Our team plays an integral role at convocation, and they all deserve a big THANK YOU! Here’s a photo of us having fun at this year’s spring Convocation!

What does it mean for you to be a 2024 Employee Excellence Leadership Award recipient?

I am privileged to lead such a dedicated and diverse team. The award signifies the hard work and genuine care of each individual member of the Student Records department in supporting students and their success.

Garden and water feature on the Burnaby Campus

Do you have a favourite spot or activity at the BCIT campuses that you enjoy spending your time at and why?

If I need a moment to reset and center myself, there’s a serene garden and water feature nestled in the courtyard on the Burnaby Campus between SW1, SW3, and SE12. There are benches to sit, take in the sounds, and if you’re lucky witness birds taking in the nectar of the flowers. It is a gem of a spot!

Share with us how what you are passionate about outside of work. Do you have any hobbies?

Among my passions are physical activity, exerting my body, and being in the beautiful nature of our province. In the winter you’ll find me on the hills skiing and in the summer in the many beautiful outdoor pools Vancouver and Burnaby have to offer. I am privileged to have the capacity to move and challenge my physical limits!

Come grow with us. Explore rewarding opportunities at BCIT.
