BCIT honoured and excited to introduce the BCIT Accessibility Plan 2023, our first Institute plan in support of the Accessible British Columbia Act (ABCA). Compliance with this legislation is a requirement for all post-secondary institutions but we are proud to say that BCIT has been leading the way in our sector. Our plan exceeds all requirements in the legislation and centers the perspectives of people with lived experience of accessibility barriers, namely people with disabilities.
BCIT’s Accessibility Plan is a significant step in our commitment to identifying, removing, and preventing barriers to access for people with disabilities. This Plan is a direct reflection of our values – particularly our commitment to championing diversity and inclusion.
Everyone has a part to play in our plan to create a more accessible institution. We are grateful to the members of the BCIT Accessibility Steering Committee and the Accessibility Plan Working Group, who have worked with us over the past year to develop a vision for accessibility at BCIT.
The BCIT Accessibility Plan provides:
- An overview of the Accessible BC Act
- Our framework for viewing disability considering the legislation and modernized approaches
- The feedback strategy used to collect valuable feedback from our community
- Our early findings about accessibility barriers at BCIT
- Actions we will consider to make BCIT campuses barrier-free environments
Accessibility is a shared responsibility, and we welcome ongoing input from all members of BCIT and the broader community. Download the plan from the BCIT Accessibility Hub.
Everyone has a role to play in creating a more accessible BCIT. Share your feedback about accessibility barriers you’ve seen or experienced. You can offer feedback via the new online Feedback Form or the Safety Wise app.
