The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) Department of Civil Engineering is celebrating 15 successful years of the BCIT Civil Engineering Bachelor of Engineering degree program.
The two-year Civil & Structural Engineering Diploma of Technology was one of the first programs at BCIT since it opened in 1964. In 2003, the Civil and Structural Engineering department in the BCIT School of Construction and the Environment began transitioning the diploma program into a four-year Bachelor of Engineering degree. The first graduates of the new Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering received their degrees in June 2007.
The BCIT Civil Engineering degree was nationally accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board in 2010. The BCIT Civil Engineering degree was the first non-university-affiliated program in Canada to receive accreditation. 2022 represents the 15 year anniversary of this respected program and is an excellent time to acknowledge all Civil Engineering Bachelor of Engineering alumni, and in particular those from the first graduating class who put their careers on hold back in 2005 to return to the as-yet unapproved degree program.
The Civil Engineering students have accomplished much over the years. The BCIT Student Chapter of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) has been awarded the national CSCE President’s Best Student Chapter 2020-2021 Award. This award continues an impressive and strong tradition for the BCIT CSCE Student Chapter. The Chapter has won this prestigious award now six times: 2011, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2021.
BCIT Civil Engineering grads are highly sought after by the construction industry. If you name a large-scale infrastructure project in BC, you can bet BCIT Civil Engineering grads had a hand in it.
Congratulations to all of the BCIT Civil Engineering grads, faculty, retired faculty, staff and alumni!
Just saw this post and as a BCIT C&S Grad from 1981 I wanted to add my congratulations!
I also have a couple of questions of interest, if someone could take the time to respond, I would appreciate it.
Of the Graduates from the C&S Program, in each year, how many students exit after obtaining their Diploma and join the workforce as Technologists and how graduate with their Batchelor Degree and join the workforce as an Engineer?
You mention the Degree Program is nationally accredited, is the Diploma Program still similarly nationally accredited?
Thanks,
Dan G. Mooney, AScT (Retired -LM)

Hi Dan, thanks for reaching out and sharing your congratulations. All students who successfully complete the first two years of the program receive a nationally-accredited Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, while students who successfully complete years three and four also receive a nationally-accredited Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering. You can find more information online about graduate employment outcomes for the diploma and degree program.
