BCITMA returns from New Orleans with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishes

The BCITMA joined over 1,300 marketing students representing AMA university and college chapters across North America in New Orleans to participate in one of the largest collegiate conferences in the United States – the American Marketing Association’s International Collegiate Conference (AMAICC).

All the club’s efforts throughout the year culminate at the conference in New Orleans, where the club has the opportunity to compete in a number of group and individual competitions. 20 BCIT School of Business students attended the conference with instructor Tracey Renzullo.

The team did a great job representing BCIT, and return to Vancouver with many accolades including:

1st Place – Communication of Chapter Activities; Exhibit Competition. The theme of this year’s conference was The Timeless Beauty of Marketing, which the exhibit team, led by Amy Sherwood, communicated through a very popular Mad Men themed Exhibit. The exhibit was pitched to AMA Faculty and Sponsor Judges by sales student Emily Sander and e-ship student Dhalathan Aiyathurai.

2nd Place – SABRE Business Simulation Competition. SABRE is a highly competitive business simulation played by many of the top business schools in the US. BCIT came a close second to the Wharton Business School.  Our team included Philip Huang, Samantha Quon, Nico Aguirre, Kenton Duncan, Jennifer Wu, and Karl Chen.

3rd Place – Mary Kay Case Competition. 104 schools in total submitted written cases in December 2017, with the top 10 selected to present in New Orleans to an audience of Mary Kay Top Marketing Executives, including CMO, Sheryl Adkins-Green. The case competition is the most challenging competition, requiring the most amount of hard work all year long. The case team was led by Mallory Smylie and Gregory Frame. For the presentation, they were joined by Alana Pappas, Sarah Lowery and Ryan Francis.

In addition, students attended many professional development sessions at the conference, while also competing in the T-Shirt, Perfect Pitch and the 1st Inaugural Student Digital Marketing Competition.

The BCITMA was also recognized for being a Top 15 Chapter. There are 429 Collegiate Chapters in the AMA!

As recognition of the BCITMA previous year’s Top Chapter status, BCITMA club President Tony Skorberg and Vice President Samantha Quon, were invited to speak to conference attendees on how to become a top chapter.

As a member of the AMA Collegiate Chapters Council, Tracey Renzullo also ran two sessions at the conference; along with case co-chair from Temple University, Craig Atwater. The topic of the first was what it takes to be a case finalist and the second session included announcing the winning case team’s presentation and unveiling The Wall Street Journal as the confirmed case sponsor for the 2018/2019 case competition.

A big thank you to the BCITMA Corporate Sponsors and the BCIT School of Business who support the activities of the club all year long. Also thank you to ALL BCITMA Members who work so hard throughout the year. Each and every member contributes to the successes of the club.
