BCIT Recreation Services hosts a Free Trial Week at the start of every term to give the BCIT community a chance to try any of their premium classes for free. As a BCIT student in the New Media Design and Web Development program, I recently tried the Hatha Yoga class on Monday, January 20. Here’s what I learned:
Difficult positions
As a person who does not do yoga regularly and has not tried to in a very long time, it was difficult to follow the simple positions that were taught at the beginning. Looking around the room, it seemed that most people could accomplish the correct form while staying fairly comfortable. For me, it was hard to sit on my ankles, as my feet have difficulty bending like that for long periods of time.
Amazing vibes
Yet, I found the yoga class very relaxing, and I absolutely loved the vibes in the studio. I felt like my mind was calmer and more at ease after the class, which is usually the point of yoga, so I felt like it was a fulfilling experience.
I recommend trying the Hatha Yoga class if you already have some sort of mobility, or if you are familiar with yoga. However, I believe that anybody who is actively stretching and working out may find this class valuable as well.
Even more amazing people
When I joined the class, it was already quite full, but the studio itself is quite large, allowing many people to sign up for the class.
Throughout the session, I was very motivated to do well in class because there were three other men that were quite older than me who had little to no trouble with most of the exercises.
It definitely gave me a boost of confidence, knowing that if they could do it, I could do it too. The people were very friendly and respectful. I got the chance to speak with plenty of encouraging people during class, which made me feel comfortable about trying something new.
