BCIT Recreation Services: Futsal

BCIT Recreation Services is dedicated to the health and well-being of all BCIT students, faculty, staff, and members of the BCIT community. As part of their commitment, BCIT Recreation Services offers drop-in sporting activities for all members of the community to participate in and enjoy.

As a BCIT student in the New Media Design and Web Development program, I wanted to take advantage of the many recreational services BCIT had to offer by challenging myself to participate in three different classes this term. In this article series, I recount my takeaways from participating in futsal, floor hockey, and hath yoga classes:

Discovering Futsal

January 20th marked the second day of drop-in for Futsal for the Winter 2025 term, which is essentially indoor soccer for those unfamiliar.

Apart from playing in high school during the lunch break, I am essentially brand new to futsal, and nowhere near able to compete with league players.

However, I wanted to try Futsal because I’ve always liked playing soccer in school and wanted to experience that again.

Taking a Dive

I decided to join the team as a goaltender, since that was the position I used to play when I was in high school. Naturally, I found it more comforting than being a forward.

After a few minutes of playing, I quickly realized just how bad of an idea that was. I had already let in a few goals, and I just could not stop the ball. While I don’t usually criticize myself for not excelling at something, it was still a bit frustrating.

Fortunately, I did perform better as the game went along.

Playing the Game

My team was awesome. The people who I played with during the drop-in session were friendly and easy to get along with, and they were also great at futsal, which helped me gain the confidence I needed to play the game as a first timer.

One of our games went to a shootout loss that lasted a couple of rounds. During the shootout, I was not able to make any saves, the opposing team just missed the net a few times.

We had some sharp shooters on our team that tried to make up for my lack of goaltending, but it was not successful.

Futsal takeaways

Overall, I had a good time. The BCIT community made my experience more enjoyable than I had initially expected. While I personally am not a huge futsal fan, I recommend trying this drop-in futsal class for those who enjoy running, playing as a team, and kicking the ball around.

No gear is required, although as a goaltender you might want some kneepads.

Futsal runs every Monday at 5:30pm, so bring some friends and try it out! February schedule can be found here.

Keep in mind that futsal is quite popular among BCIT students, so there may be lots of other players and teams waiting their turn to play.
