The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) offers comprehensive training and professional development to its military members that can easily be transferred into the civilian workforce. Some of these skills include leadership, coaching, and discipline, in addition to specific hard-skill training tailored to individual occupations. Despite these valuable skills, when military members or veterans decide to transition to the civilian workforce, much of their prior training often goes unrecognized. The CAF remains a misunderstood organization, with the public largely unaware of its daily contributions to society.
To address this issue, the BCIT Legion Military Skills Conversion program works to bridge the gap between skilled military members and veterans directly with employers who recognize the skills and attributes they bring to the civilian workforce. While the program specializes in assessing military service toward advanced placement into BCIT programs, it goes beyond by offering entrepreneurship training and career preparation. The BCIT Legion program works to break down the misunderstandings and barriers faced by military members and veterans for their successful career moves. As well, it aims to create an open space where employers can learn what military members and veterans can bring to their workforce.
Since the inception of the BCIT program in 2008, nearly 1,000 military members and veterans have accessed the services from across Canada. The program’s commitment to directly connecting the military with employment and further education opportunities, represents a natural progression in providing comprehensive support for veterans, ensuring a seamless transition into civilian life.
