Recreation Services has revamped its Climbing Wall located within the Recreation and Wellness Centre, Building SE16, on the Burnaby Campus. Now known as “The Lab: Bouldering Gym”, this modernized version updates BCIT’s Climbing Wall, which first opened its doors in the late 1990s. This upgrade expands Recreations Services’ portfolio beyond traditional sports and fitness activities, offering an alternative avenue for physical exercise and engagement.
The newly refurbished space is approximately 600 square foot area, tripling the climbing space of the previous wall. Beyond its size, the quality has been lifted to include a new variety of wall angles (from 0 to 45 degrees) that offers climbers of all abilities the possibility to challenge themselves with boulder problems ranging from VB (for beginners) to V10+ (for experienced climbers).
To keep the space updated, the Recreation Team aims to update the climbing routes every two to three weeks, ensuring a mix of familiarity and novelty. Staff are trained to introduce novices, as well as introductory climbing classes in the near future.
The revamped space is not just about climbing walls, this holistic activity also promotes three distinct perspective on wellness: (1) physical strength, endurance, flexibility, and power; (2) mentally, climbers are constantly problem-solving, figuring out the best routes for their body types and skill levels; and (3) socially, bouldering fosters a sense of community, mentorship, and shared responsibility.
Experience the sport of climbing, right on campus. The Lab is accessible on a drop-in basis during Recreation Services’ regular operating hours, and a safety orientation will be required the first time you attend.
