Our People: Meet Lester de Guzman, Business Development Manager, BCIT School of Business + Media

Putting people at the core of everything we do is paramount at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. We are committed to ensuring our people — those who make BCIT distinct, are developing while feeling valued, supported, and connected.

BCIT is a people-first organization. We aim to celebrate our employees by sharing their stories through the Our People series. The series features BCIT’s extraordinary employees who share a strong sense of pride and ambition for the Institute and make up our diverse community.

Get to know Lester de Guzman, Business Development Manager, School of Business + Media.

How would you summarize the work that you do at the Institute in 15 words or less?

I support new initiatives, partnerships, recruitment and marketing for the School of Business + Media.

In what ways have you developed professionally while working with the Institute?

BCIT has given me the opportunity to develop professionally with the support of BCIT staff, faculty, and management. The support and guidance I received from my managers through the years have shaped my perspective at work and in life. School of Business + Media also allowed me to participate in various leadership programs and networking events hosted by BCIT and the Board of Trades in the Lower Mainland. In addition, having a supportive team helps me develop my communication and interpersonal skills.

What does being a recipient of the BCIT 2023 Employee Excellence Awards for Leadership mean to you?

I am incredibly grateful and humbled to win the Employee Excellence Award at BCIT. Working at BCIT is very fulfilling because we help develop the future workforce of BC and Canada. Our students come through our institution with practical skills and knowledge to thrive in their chosen careers. From the time they set foot in their first class to graduation day, you can see the development and confidence they gain as they enter the industry. So receiving this award is a bonus reaffirming why I come to work and do my best in supporting that mission.

Share with us how you spend your time outside of work, what are your hobbies?

I am a competitive Latin ballroom dancer representing BC and Canada in domestic and international competitions. I have been with my dance partner, a BCIT alum from the Nursing program, for over five years. After work, I spend most of my time at the dance studio practicing or taking lessons to improve my technique and craft. I enjoy ballroom dancing because it expresses through music and movement. Besides getting good exercise, it also allows me to connect with the dance community and serves as an escape from my daily routine.

  1. You’re a true inspiration to all! You also are a true gem for many Filipino-Canadian communities as well as our country, the Philippines. We celebrate your hard work, continuing studies and ethics. And above all a true Canuck. To many success and celebration.
