Putting people at the core of everything we do is paramount at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. We are committed to ensuring our people — those who make BCIT distinct, are developing while feeling valued, supported, and connected.
BCIT is a people-first organization. We aim to celebrate our employees by sharing their stories through the Our People series. The series features BCIT’s extraordinary employees who share a strong sense of pride and ambition for the Institute and make up our diverse community.
Get to know Dr. Eric Anderson, Program Head, BCIT Ecological Restoration, Bachelor of Science.
How long have you been working at BCIT?
I’ve been working at BCIT for 12 years.
How would you summarize the work that you do at the Institute in 15 words or less?
I facilitate applied learning for my exceptional students, with the overarching aim of launching their successful careers in the environmental sciences.
In what ways have you developed professionally while working with the Institute?
The main focus of my professional development at BCIT has always been my role as an educator. I’ve particularly enjoyed fostering win-win relationships that entail my students engaging in applied learning projects that contribute to the efforts of my professional colleagues to deliver on their mandate of managing ecosystems. My work with several marine research and conservation organizations also enables me to keep my students apprised of contemporary conservation techniques and initiatives.
What does being a recipient of the BCIT 2023 Employee Excellence Award for Teaching Excellence mean to you?
I’m consistently awed by the accomplishments of my students and colleagues, and so to be nominated by them for a Teaching Excellence Award is very humbling.
Share with us how you spend your time outside of work. Do you have any hobbies?
Outside of work I spend as much time as possible outdoors, including especially cross-country skiing and sea kayaking with family and friends.
