The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) was named one of BC’s Top Employers for 2023 by Canada’s Top 100 Employers—for the thirteenth consecutive year. This special designation recognizes the BC employers that lead their industries in offering exceptional places to work.
BCIT was specifically recognized for fostering a culture of encouragement and support for its employees. “We’ve done a lot of listening to our employees and developed the BCIT People Vision to support growth, facilitate effectiveness, and foster a collegial environment,” says Ana Lopez, Vice President, Human Resources and People Development.
As featured in the BC’s Top Employers article about BCIT, Dr. Jaimie Borisoff, Director, MAKE+ at BCIT shares how the Institute has been instrumental in his career growth. He started at BCIT as Canada Research Chair in Rehabilitation Engineering Design (REDLab) where he and his team developed adaptive technology for people with mobility impairments.
After several years, Dr. Borisoff was encouraged to apply for the Director role in MAKE+ allowing him to lead a group of multidisciplinary researchers focused on product and process development, evaluation, applied research projects, and education.
“One third of the members of our Applied Research team have been here [at BCIT] over 25 years,” says Dr. Borisoff. “I hear from other places that they are having trouble recruiting, but we have great applicants. I think the word of mouth out there is that BCIT has a nice culture that’s good to be a part of.”
In addition to the BCIT People Vision, the Institute has also released the BCIT Indigenous Vision and Anti-Racism Framework as a guide to create a learning and working environment that is actively engaged in promoting Indigenization, equity, and inclusivity.
BCIT also recently received national recognition as one of Canada’s Best Employers for 2023 by Forbes for its commitment to being a people-first organization.
