The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the billions of physical devices around the world that are now connected to the Internet, all collecting and sharing data. In an era of digital transformation, IoT is growing at an accelerated rate, and so are the applications, trends, and technologies surrounding it. BCIT is at the forefront of this emerging technology with advanced hands-on education and training, industry collaboration, and research. Now, adding to this leadership is a published textbook, Fundamentals of Internet of Things: For students and professionals, from BCIT Electrical and Computer Engineering faculty Dr. John Dian.

Dr. John Dian has been conducting research in the field of IoT for years. It was through this experience that he realized there are a lot of misconceptions about this topic and that most post-secondary programs are not preparing students with the relevant skillset and knowledge for the era of IoT. As a result, Dr. Dian published this textbook in efforts to improve learner access for practical, accurate, and easy-to-understand resources on topics related to Internet of Things.

Fundamentals of Internet of Things: For Students and Professionals teaches the principles of IoT systems. It employs a systematic approach to explain IoT architecture models and their layers. The textbook is arranged based on various layers of an architecture model. For readers who are unfamiliar with the concept of data communication and networks, the first chapter of this book covers the fundamentals of data communication and networks. It can also be used as review material for those who are already familiar with the concept.

The book begins with many examples of IoT applications. The concept of smart sensors is then described, as well as their applications in the IoT ecosystem. As internet connectivity is an essential part of any IoT system, the book also explores wired and wireless connectivity schemes including cellular IoT in 4G and 5G. Topics related to IoT protocols, analytics, security, and privacy are covered throughout the book, with the last chapter dedicated to IoT solution development.
