BCIT is delighted to announce the appointment of Jan Smith as Registrar. With over 20 years of post-secondary experience, Jan will be responsible for leading a highly committed Registrar’s Office.
Jan comes to BCIT from the BC Council for International Education where she has been part of the leadership team, responsible for Board administration; government relations; communications; finance and administration.
Jan served the community of Langara College as Interim AVP, Students, and Registrar and as Registrar where she led the Registrar and Enrolment Services team. Jan had previously served as the College’s Associate Registrar and Director of Enrolment Services and during her time at Langara, oversaw a wide range of Langara’s enrolment services including domestic recruitment, admissions, appeals, systems, records, registration, scheduling, curriculum, financial assistance, transfer credit, graduation, U-Pass, and convocation.
Prior to Langara, Jan was an Associate Registrar at Vancouver Community College, and was the Manager of Academic Resource Services at the School of International Studies, Simon Fraser University.
Thanks to the valuable input from key stakeholders, the Registrar selection committee was able to focus its attention on a very specific leadership profile that emphasized strong interpersonal skills, a student-focused approach, a track record of introducing new technologies, and an impeccable track record of collaboration and teamwork in a registrarial setting.
The selection committee felt the import of the decision, given the significant contribution of long serving and retiring Registrar Dawna Mackay and we feel very excited by Jan’s breadth and depth of knowledge and experience, and her positive, solutions-driven approach to the work.
Jan holds a Master of Arts in Leadership and Training from Royal Roads University (2010), and a Bachelor of Arts and Social Sciences from Simon Fraser University (2005).
Jan’s first day at BCIT is April 1. Welcome to BCIT, Jan!
