How BCIT supported the jobs of tomorrow in 2021

For more than 55 years, BCIT has been at the forefront of industry trends and change. From our automotive division to the School of Computing and Academic Studies, our programs and courses continue to developed with industry partners and delivered by industry leaders. As the connection between education and industry, BCIT ensures students receive relevant, hands-on experience for success in their chosen fields while our industry partners see their needs met in future workforce development.

Discover some of the ways BCIT collaborated with industry to support our learners and the workforce this year:

1. BCIT Pandemic-Resilient Jobs Report identifies most in-demand jobs for 2021 and beyond

The pandemic has changed the workforce. What are jobs that will withstand the pressures of an ever-changing world? BCIT SITE Centre of Excellence sought to answer this question by looking at economic trends combined with recent employment patterns to discover high-opportunity occupations of the decade. Here are the sectors to watch out for in 2022 and beyond.

2. BCIT partners with industry on virtual clean-energy training platform for First Nations communities

Working with Siemens Canada, Denesoline Corporation, and the Digital Supercluster, BCIT is proud to partner with Łutsël K’é Dene First Nation in the Northwest Territories to produce an online vocational training program in Clean Energy Power Plants for First Nations communities.

3. BCIT partners with YVR Innovation Hub as living lab for IoT

In collaboration with the Vancouver International Airport (YVR), the BCIT Centre for Internet of Things established a new research lab where students gain real-world experience researching new processes and technologies, including how sensors might be able to increase the digital intelligence of our devices.

4. Seaspan Shipyards invests $1.65M to create new BCIT Research Chair in Welding Technologies and Metallurgy Research

The advancement of welding and engineering in BC’s marine manufacturing industry comes as the driving force behind this exciting, first of its kind partnership with Seaspan Shipyards – a leader in Canadian shipbuilding and ship repair.

5. BCIT and Canadian Tire partner to deliver customized automotive apprenticeship training

To help meet the growing demand for highly skilled and qualified Red Seal automotive technicians, Canadian Tire tapped BCIT to create a customized training program for its employees featuring some of the most highly skilled technicians in the industry.

6. BCIT launches Master of Engineering in Smart Grid Systems and Technologies

With over 15 years of industry-led, world-class applied research initiatives related to smart grids, BCIT introduced a part-time, hands-on program to support industry professionals in keeping the relevant skills for BC’s everchanging energy industry.

7. BCIT introduces microcredentials with the launch of three programs

Following the rise of microcredentials during the pandemic and the desire for rapid but flexible upskilling programs to stay ahead of workplace trends, BCIT launched three courses developed in collaboration with industry – Essentials of Natural Resource and Environmental Protection, Digital Transformation, and Introductory Studies in Mass Timber Construction.

8. BCIT Industrial Network Cybersecurity Lab is the first of its kind in Canada

Located at Burnaby Campus, the Industrial Network Cybersecurity Lab is training the next generation of network security professionals through game-based learning, such as simulated cyber attacks and defense among students in a controlled environment.

9. Catalyzing innovation: BCIT introduces Centre for Digital Transformation

Not only does this hub for future-proof education support the development of digital skills in BC’s workforce, but it also attracts teams of experts from fields like cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and the internet of things, to collaborate, research, and share information.
