New career opportunities for a new world

Over the course of 2020, the world changed almost beyond recognition. So it begs the question: what kinds of jobs will there be in 2021 and beyond? The short answer is that there are actually boundless opportunities. That said, the in-demand careers of tomorrow will look a bit different than today’s, for a few reasons.

First and foremost, since businesses have made the shift to online operations and delivery, many jobs will be digitized—and that means it’ll be easier to work for companies around the world without having to relocate. There will also be a range of career opportunities that have arisen as a result of the global pandemic, with governments and businesses striving to build more resilient systems.

Not only that, but a specific mix of software and hardware skills will be needed to meet the new realities of the job market. In addition to technology skills, trade skills will be fundamental to maintain the infrastructure of our homes, communities, and workplaces, with a renewed focus on sustainability.

With these trends in mind, here’s a sample of some of the courses offered at BCIT to prepare today’s learners for tomorrow’s jobs.

1. Chemical and Environmental Technology

The global need to reduce, reuse, and recycle is greater than ever—but emerging industries such as biofuel, hydrogen, and fuel cell technologies still need to perfect their physical, chemical, and technological processes if they’re going to drive the green economy.

The two-year Chemical and Environmental Technology diploma program gives you the opportunity to be a part of these exciting fields. And while there are many applications in business and industry beyond green technology, this is a great option for anyone who’s interested in science, innovation, and applying their skills practically to make a difference in the world.

2. Full-Stack Web Development

Every user-friendly web application you encounter is underscored by several layers—from the front-end features you interact with to the back-end code. As organizations across industries move to digital business models and migrate their data to the cloud, they need experts who can build and maintain a full technology stack and create experiences their clients will love.

The Full-Stack Web Development diploma program at BCIT teaches you the skills you need for a career as a web developer. During the two-year program, you’ll also learn key business skills to help you succeed, including project and team management. Interdisciplinary projects let you put your knowledge to the test and network with industry professionals.

3. Graphic Communications Technology Management

There’s not a single organization out there that can survive and succeed without communicating who they are and what they do, which means delivering elegant, eloquent, and engaging materials is more critical than ever. That’s why companies across the globe are working with graphic designers, production artists, and imaging managers. These are versatile and creative career paths that add huge value to any business.

At BCIT, the two-year diploma in Graphic Communications Technology Management teaches you the hands-on skills required for work in this dynamic field. With a curriculum designed by industry leaders that involves two different job placements—as well as training in large format imaging, colour management, business processes, and CRM systems—you’ll be graduating with a complete career toolkit. And if you want to stay in school, your diploma can also serve as the beginning of a Bachelor’s of Business Administration.

4. Global Trade and Transportation Management

In early 2020, international supply chains ground to a halt as a result of regional lockdowns—a scenario no one wants to repeat. Now, as we build more resilience into our business strategies and trade agreements, international business management professionals have an important role to play.

The BCIT Global Trade and Transportation Management diploma program places you at all stages of the global supply chain, from deciding whether a product is right for your market, to determining its route of transportation, to managing its inventory and building relationships with partners. The final term of this program includes a 10-week consulting project in which you develop a solution for a real-world business issue.

5. Industrial Network Cybersecurity

Since every digital system is susceptible to cyberattacks—including the critical infrastructure that our homes, businesses, and communities depend on—the need for cybersecurity professionals can’t be overstated. In particular, we need specialists who possess a nuanced understanding of the industrial control systems and operation technologies our modern society is built upon.

In order to meet this need, the School of Energy and the School of Computing and Academic Studies at BCIT have teamed up to create a unique, interdisciplinary diploma in Industrial Network Cybersecurity. This two-year program provides a comprehensive understanding of computer information and industrial control technologies, and gives graduates the knowledge and skills to be at the forefront in this fast-growing—and immensely necessary—field.

6. Marketing Management

Organizations are adapting to a changed world—and for many, that means pivoting to new operating models, rethinking the services and offerings they provide, and reinventing themselves through digital transformation. Whether you’re helping a company reach new audiences with a rebranding, or working with a new venture to spread the word and raise capital, marketing is one of the most varied and applicable skill sets you can add to your resumé. That’s why BCIT offers four different full-time diplomas in this in-demand industry.

While all students start in the Marketing Management diploma, you can choose to specialize in Entrepreneurship, Marketing Communications, Professional Sales, or Tourism. All boast high rates of recruitment thanks to industry-designed curriculums that turn your field experience into job opportunities—and offerings.

7. Sustainable Business Leadership

Ever heard of ESG? It stands for “environmental, social, and governance”—in other words, good for the planet, good for the people, and good for employees and shareholders. These core considerations are being embraced by companies today to help ensure a better tomorrow. Become an expert on these conscientious business practices, and you’ll be an asset to any organization—or in a prime position to launch your own sustainable cause and career.

The Advanced Diploma in Sustainable Business Leadership at BCIT was designed to empower students to do just that. The industry-led curriculum can be completed in just 10 months full time, though if you’re a working professional, you also have up to four years to study part time at your own pace. Ultimately, the program culminates in a two-term consulting project with a real client so you can prove your expertise and enter the workforce with confidence.

Last year, there may have been a lot of talk about the uncertainty of the future—but as industries continue to pivot and evolve, new career opportunities are continuing to open up for young professionals.
