BCIT Alumni Association and Prospera Credit Union partner to offer much-needed financial help for trades students

In a new partnership launched this September, the BCIT Alumni Association and Prospera Credit Union are proud to offer eligible BCIT trades apprenticeship students financial support to bridge the gap between being accepted at BCIT and the start of Employment Insurance (EI) benefits.

“We are so pleased to partner with Prospera Credit Union on this innovative program to serve our apprenticeship students ,” says Leslie Courchesne, executive director, BCIT Alumni Association. “When students start a BCIT apprenticeship program, many will face a time without an income, which can be an obstacle to completing their training and realizing their career goals. This program can help relieve that financial stress.”

“Working with the BCIT Alumni Association is a natural partnership for us at Prospera,” says Diane Dou, Prospera Credit Union president and CEO. “By supporting the education of students, we’re not only helping them pay for school but also giving them a head start in their careers. Many of these students will go on to become local business owners, the backbone of the BC economy, and we’re proud to offer them this chance of education.”

BCIT’s apprenticeship graduates are integral to the workforce in British Columbia and in high demand. In fact, statistics show that 96 per cent of the institute’s apprenticeship completers are employed after graduation. These alumni are part of the more than 5,500 BCIT students who are enrolled in full-time apprenticeship programs in areas including construction trades, mechanic and repair technologies, precision production, and transportation and materials moving.
