A Valentine’s Day-inspired love story: Why this BCIT alumnus and student tied the knot on Burnaby Campus

After Jurie helped Lili with a flat tire, she invited him to dinner. Sparks flew, igniting a powerful romance whose wedding could only be held at BCIT’s Burnaby Campus.

“We thought it would be a unique and an amazing experience to have our wedding at a location that means something wonderful to both Lili and me,” says Jurie Human about their choice to host their special day at BCIT.

The wedding

On June 30, 2018, they were a picture-perfect groom and bride. Jurie and Lili were all smiles as they exchanged vows in the BCIT Student Association (BCITSA) Council Chambers—he in a natty blue suit, gray vest, and burgundy tie, and she in an off-the-shoulder gown and floor-length veil.

After the ceremony, guests were treated to coffee and pastries from The Stand stores (BCITSA owned and operated) while the wedding party travelled by limo bus for photos, some of which included familiar BCIT fixtures like the campus’ resident geese and Guichon Creek. After that, guests continued the celebration at a sit-down dinner reception at Habitat Pub.

“It was buffet style,” says Jurie. “There were salads, side dishes, chicken, and roast beef. We also had gluten-free and vegan options, so we had quite the spread.”

After dinner, Lili and her bridesmaids surprised everyone with a choreographed dance.

Everything went smoothly, thanks to good planning. Says Lili, “We made sure we had a liquor licence and booked the spaces in advance. We also sent out a map of BCIT with directions on where to park and how to find the location.”

Love affair with BCIT

Just like their romance sparked when Jurie helped Lili fix a flat tire, the couple’s relationship with BCIT began with a desire to better their circumstances, and, ultimately, to move forward on their road to success.

“I decided on BCIT since it’s the best school for trades,” says Jurie, a BCIT Automotive Service Technician alumnus and a BCAA Road Assistance fleet technician. “Someone I worked with tried to convince me not to go since it was the ‘hard school,’ but I took that as a sign [that BCIT was a] better school.”

“I set up interviews with HR representatives of various companies,” says Lili, a current part-time student and an account coordinator for the BCITSA on campus. “They said they are most likely to hire students who graduate from BCIT. They are well educated but also job ready and much easier to train into their positions. I love what I currently do so my aspiration is to grow as a person through education, work, and various programs that exist on campus and be able to grow within the organization.”

Congratulations to the newlyweds on choosing BCIT for their careers and on getting married. This may not be the last we see of the couple’s celebrations on campus. Jurie jokingly hinted a golden anniversary bash on Burnaby Campus isn’t out of the question.
