How to increase your chance of landing your dream job

Graduation is only a few months away but now it’s time for that job hunt. Hundreds of applicants are applying to the position that you desire. How can you increase your chances of receiving that interview?

Luckily, BCIT’s Student Association provides students with a variety of occupational resources to help pave the path for their career ahead!

Personally, before I even began researching employers and googling jobs I had to develop my resume and cover letter so that I could clearly portray my skills and strengths in a professional manner. This was not easy! In fact, I asked one of my friends for help and he directed me to Career Track, BCIT Student Association’s free job search tool and contact database. Here I was able to register for free resumé and cover letter workshops for tips and tricks on how to get my job package noticed. Furthermore, I found out that I could book an appointment with a career counsellor to further discuss my job portfolio.

These workshops came in handy as I designed my resumé into a professional document and learned how to cater my cover letters to specific employers. However, even with a great cover letter and resume you may still not get noticed!

This is where networking can really set you aside from other candidates. BCIT’s Student Association also provides free industry nights and career fairs where a variety of employers come to BCIT seeking to recruit students.

A list of employers who are going to be attending the industry nights are always available on the SA’s career services page under the events category.

Not only are all these resources free, but they provide you with excellent feedback on your job portfolio and hopefully even land you your dream job.

For more information on these services, check out and sign up on Career Track and take a look at upcoming BCITSA career services events.
