The air was filled with excited energy. Former U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama spoke in Vancouver Thursday, February 15 in front of two enthusiastic sold-out crowds at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. In the audience, 24 eager BCIT students. The opportunity for them to be there was made possible through funding from the BCIT Foundation Distinguished Speaker Program in partnership with the BCIT Student Association. The students were hosted in a pre-speech ceremony by BCIT President Kathy Kinloch and VP Advancement Paul McCullough, together with members of the Board of Governors.
“Our donors recognize the importance of our students interacting with world-class influencers,” said McCullough. “We’re looking forward to bringing even more inspirational leaders, experts, and innovators to our doorstep.”
BCIT Business student Jessica Stafford was one of the lucky few that won a ticket to the speech. “Michelle is so inspiring for young women in business. She demonstrates grace, excellence, and intelligence for all women who dream big.” Other students attending spoke of how important it is to have a role model like Michelle to look up to. “I’m inspired by her, “ said Interior Design student Sydney Martin. “I’m looking forward to utilizing what she says in my personal and professional life.”
The Distinguished Speaker Program Fund has attracted leaders such as Canadian Astronaut and now Governor General Julie Payette, and Google Director of Engineering Ray Kurzweil. In a rapidly changing world, BCIT continues to explore avenues to inspire and ignite student passions.
