Having moved into residence a few weeks ago, I was apparently unaware of ALL the perks associated with it. On top of having a 5 minute walk to class, 4 minute walk to Tim Hortons and 3 minute walk to the gym, living on res also means that Residence Assistants (RAs) put on social events for us!
This week the RAs organized and hosted a Maquinna Residence music bingo night at the campus pub, Habitat. This was an all-ages event fir residences and it only cost $2!
The $2 covered a full meal, non-alcoholic drinks, dessert and prizes, overall it was a pretty good deal, even if you didn’t win anything, which I didn’t.
We played three games of bingo and each game had a theme and an AMAZING first place prize (none of which went to me):
- The first game was High School Dance Party. This was kind of funny since the age differential between everyone there was big enough that songs ranged from 20 years ago to only a few years ago. I like to think that was so cover everyones high school memories. The prize for this round was 2 tickets to a Vancouver Canucks Game! Not bad!
- Canadian Artists was theme number two. There were ~4 Avril Lavigne songs which everyone knew and 1 Great Big Sea song which, I think I was the only one who knew.. The prize for this round was 2 FLOOR SEAT TICKETS TO THE JUNOS! By far the coolest prize!
- The last bingo card was all Disney songs. This was everyone’s favourite and the first place prize was half months rent ($300).
I was pretty surprised by how extravagant the prizes were! I have gone to music bingo in bars before where the first place prize was a blender.. definitely not as exciting as Juno tickets.
On top of that there was a whole table of draw prizes including Kate Spade blankets, movie tickets, S’well water bottles and a bunch more. I also went home with 2 chocolate bars and a free dinner.
Residence life is shaping up to be pretty good so far. Only a few weeks in and I would recommend it to future students!
