5 keys to being a great intern

Hello!

My first internship was this past summer doing public relations for Crankworx in Whistler BC. More recently I recently finished a communications internship at the Canadian Red Cross. After learning through these experiences and talking with my supervisors I have learned five things that are key to being a good intern.

       1. Know before you go

It is important to know about the company and the people you will be working for. Make sure you do your research about their history, their mission and what they are currently working on. Knowing the industry and staying up to date on these things will be helpful when conversing with colleagues and your boss. It will also show that you have a genuine interest in being there and that you care about the work.

       2. Be on time

This should be self explanatory but it is so important. I have always loved the saying “If you’re early you’re on time, if you’re on time, you’re late”. Of course, if there are extenuating circumstances and you cannot avoid being late you must inform your boss as soon as possible. This type of commitment will show them that you make a reliable employee.

       3. Say yes

Have a “yes” attitude and be willing to try anything. If you are flexible and keen to try new things it will reflect well on your character. Occasionally they may ask you to work late or on weekends and agreeing to these things can help you stand out. It can also be a good chance to get out of your comfort zone.

       4. Ask questions

Asking questions is a great way to learn from those around you. They will expect questions and this is your opportunity to learn new things. It is also a good idea to ask for feedback.  The Canadian Red Cross had a feedback form that my boss and I were able to go through together. We were able to discuss my strengths and things that I can improve on. This is a great edge as you can get an outside perspective and learn more about what potential employers are looking for.

     5. Be polite

This includes the usual please and thank you’s but is also a reminder to be mindful of other peoples time. Only use your phone when appropriate and avoid scrolling Instagram and Facebook when you are supposed to be doing work. Nobody wants to work with someone who is arrogant, rude or entitled so be sure to put your best foot forward.

These are some tips that have helped me.
