5 Secrets to Success at BCIT

BCIT is rightfully known for being a very demanding and fast pace learning environment. With this in mind, there are a few simple guidelines I have used to make it through:

1. Go to bed early

This is my number one rule. Paying attention in class and studying requires a lot of energy. With all other day to day activities thrown on top of that, insuring you get lots of sleep is the best way to stay healthy and alert while you are at school. Managing your work load so you do not have to stay up all night to get everything done is an acquired skill as well as a huge advantage when it comes to academic success.

2. Go for walks on your breaks

Most classes at BCIT allow for a ten minute break every hour. This time can be a huge gift if used properly. The best thing to do is get up from your desk and go for a walk. This will get your blood flowing, which will help you stay awake and alert.

3.Exercise once a day

Some form of exercise is key when you spend so many hours sitting at a desk. It doesn’t have to be high intensity, anything from walking, running, biking, yoga or lifting weights will work. I found the best thing to do is exercise right after class but before studying. This helps to reset and make studying more effective.

4.Drink lots of water

Being hydrated actually helps with brain function and energy levels! I would suggest having a water bottle on your desk at all times.

5.Take lots of study breaks

Breaks are the key to keeping your mind from getting foggy and giving it some time to retain what you have been studying. I usually take a 10 minute break each hour to walk around, have a snack and find something to distract myself. The trick here is to make sure you are not taking too many breaks or you may end up getting nothing done.
